Course Overview

The BTEC extended diploma in Performing Arts Practice is a two-year, accredited course that is the equivalent to three A Levels, perfect for students who want to enter the performing arts industry. The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with academics to ensure that it supports progression to higher education. In addition, employers and professional bodies have been involved and consulted in order to confirm that the content is appropriate and consistent with current practice should learners choose to enter employment directly in the performing arts sector.

The qualification provides the knowledge, skills and understanding that will prepare learners for further study or training. On top of the BTEC qualification itself, KTCo have designed a drama-school style timetable that will give students the full performing arts experience. From commercial dance to acting through song, performance jazz and conditioning and more.

The cohort will undertake 4 modules across two years:

Module A – ‘Performing Arts Skills Development’ – Within this module there are 3 units, which focus on personal training development and progression. Assessment in this module consists of live performance work and video log books.

Module F – ‘The Performing Arts Industry’ takes a look at social networking, employment opportunities, various career avenues, branding and more. Assessment in this module consists of a presentation.

Module G – ‘Personal Performing Arts Profile’ – This module focuses on personal development in your second year of training. More specifically, on personal statements, CVs, individual performance work, show reels and goals. Assessment in this module consists of live performance work, creation of a show reel and video logs.

Module H – ‘Collaborative Performing Arts Project’ – The final module of our BTEC Performing Arts Course will see students work towards their final showcase, exploring both creative and technical roles. This will include an insight to Choreography, Producing, Scheduling…the list goes on. Assessment in this module consists of collaborative live performances and video logs.

Each academic year is concluded by a showcase that students will be marked on as contribution to their overall BTEC grade.

The qualification provides the knowledge, skills and understanding that will prepare learners for further study or training.

Learners taking this qualification will study two mandatory learning and teaching modules:

Who is the course for?

The BTEC is aimed at post 16 students who have just finished their GCSE studies with a dream of career in the arts...

…All students will follow the same course but there are opportunities for them to pick their own pathways in certain modules to develop a different set of skills or refine the ones they already have. We pride ourselves on caring for each unique individual and compiling their own ‘Path Plan’ to achieve their ultimate goal. It is there to appeal to students who think that a more practical approach to post 16 studies would suit them better than the more academic rigour of standard A levels.

The faculty & student will work together to formulate a personal ‘Path Plan’, detailing goals and how to achieve them. It will become a changeable working document used as a reference throughout the ‘BTec’ training. Within the ‘Path Plan’ we cater to the specific focuses of each student and their personal attributes as a performer.

Why choose this course?

This BTEC will equip students with all the skills they need to confidently undertake auditions to their highest personal standard. The ultimate aim of the course is...

…to produce trainable students, ready to study in any number of establishments, whether they’re singers, actors, dancers or a combination of all three. In addition to acquiring audition skills, students will be given an honest insight into the forthcoming lifestyle and routines and prepare them both physically and mentally to cope with a future in the arts industry. Our desire is for students to graduate from this programme with a broad & extensive skillset of the highest calibre, practically and theoretically.

Students who chose the BTEC Extended Diploma must also have a love of performing, learners are required to collaborate on small and large performing arts project. Learners are required to use aspects of their technical, creative and collaborative performing arts skills to produce technically adept collaborative performing arts project. To do this, learners will draw on their creative and performance skills and select and apply learning from other learning and teaching modules to realise these outcomes, including knowledge of the industry, organisational and collaborative skills, creative thinking, technical performance skills and professional behaviours. These skills are highly regarded by higher education and employers and will greatly benefit learners who want to progress to these areas.
